  • How far do the roots spread underground?
The spread of tree roots depends on the species, soil conditions, and available space, but in general: 🌳 Most tree roots spread 2-3 times the width of the tree canopy. 📏 Lateral roots can extend up to 3-5 times the tree’s height. 📉 80-90% of roots are in the top 60cm (2ft) of soil.
  • How much can I prune from a tree without causing long-term damage?
To avoid stressing or damaging a tree, follow these general pruning guidelines: Mature trees: Remove no more than 10-15% of the canopy per year. Younger trees: Can tolerate up to 25-30% in some cases for shaping. General rule: Avoid removing more than 25% of the tree’s canopy in a single year. Key Tips: ✅ Spread major pruning over multiple years to prevent stress. ✅ Avoid excessive lower branch removal, which can weaken the tree. ✅ Never "top" a tree, as this leads to weak regrowth and potential decay. Best Time to Prune: Winter (Dormant Season): Best for most trees, allowing proper healing. Spring/Summer: Light pruning only (deadwood removal, minor shaping). Late Summer/Early Autumn: Suitable for some species but avoid heavy cuts. For specific tree species, pruning needs may vary. If unsure, consult a professional arborist. 🌿✂️
  • Is pollarding good for the health of the tree?
Benefits of Pollarding: ✅ Encourages new growth – Helps maintain a manageable size and dense foliage. ✅ Reduces risk of branch failure – Good for urban trees near roads or buildings. ✅ Extends lifespan – Some trees respond well and live longer with regular pollarding. Risks of Pollarding: ⚠️ Not suitable for all trees – Some species do not tolerate it and may decline. ⚠️ Creates weak regrowth – New shoots can be weakly attached and prone to breaking. ⚠️ Stressful for mature trees – If started too late, it can shock or even kill the tree. Best Practices for Healthy Pollarding: Only pollard young trees (starting early allows them to adapt). Choose suitable species (e.g., willow, plane, lime, poplar). Pollard regularly (every 1-3 years) to prevent large wounds. Avoid pollarding mature trees that haven’t been previously managed this way. If unsure, consult an arborist to determine whether pollarding is right for your tree. 🌳✂️
